Susan Wise Bauer is a writer, educator, and historian. Her previous books include the Writing With Ease, Writing With Skill, and Story of the World series from Well-Trained Mind Press, as well as The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home, The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had, Rethinking School, The Story of Western Science: From the Writings of Aristotle to the Big Bang Theory, and the History of the World series, all from W. My daughters are in 3rd and I bought this History curriculum for them (the book and the activity book). The activities are not challenging, but I like that there are fun educational crafts and recipes. I only gave it 3 stars because many of the worksheets you have to copy in order to use them in your lesson. Unfortunately, the crease in the book makes copies on a home printer difficult. I wish the book had an online activity site where I could print the pages. Lastly, the book has lots of coloring pages which my 3rd graders would prefer not to use. I mainly use it for the reading review questions and the recipes.
After using the first volume of this series, we were hooked. I plan on buying all levels and using it for all my children.We have five kids, all of them home schooled. Right now we are using this for our fourth and fifth grader. The great thing about this set is that you can use it for multiple ages, at one time. It is so nice to be able to combined classes with our kids! We enjoy the time together and we like that it saves us some time.Between the story book and this activity book, it is a pretty complete curriculum. We do add extra activities from time to time, if it was something the kids really enjoyed learning about.This book includes maps, puzzles, coloring and more. It really makes history fun!A++
Upon first inspection, other than a broken spine, this book looked perfectly fine. There was one colored page in the back but that was okay by me. However two weeks into our school year as I was planning out the month, I saw that several chapters were missing. A rather large chunk of the book gone. I had no idea how that many pages could be missing without it being noticeable. Later in the book, it jumps from page 80 back down to 49 and continues up from there. However as you can see, the page numbers are in different fonts. It’s like a fake reproduction. As my apparent deadline to return lapsed a month ago, I intend to report this issue.
Great addition to the stories. I like the questions to help review what was just read. The coloring pages, maps and activities are good too. We actually do t do most of the extra activities because they require things we don’t have around the house. They sound fun but I’m not running to the store for every activity and some are really involved projects that would not hold my son’s attention.
Great series! I use this material for a 9 & 11 year old. The student handbook helps inspire me to come up with other projects or I simply elaborate with what's given. I don't like for my children to do just busy work like coloring or crosswords, but I'm fine as using this as a jumping off point. My kids love the stories and have fallen in love with history because of this series.
We use this for homeschooling. We love SotW. The activity book isn't necessary but I highly recommend it. My 8yr old loved the coloring sheets and the maps are so helpful. I could probably pull something together from online but it is all there for me. We occasionally do one of the activities also.
When I ordered this I thought it was going to be kind of like a workbook. IT'S SO MUCH MORE!!! It has arts and crafts and projects. Things to make and build and activities and games. I'm so excited for this. You could use it with other history books in my opinion as well not just The Story Of The World books.
We love story of the world. It's our second year using it while home schooling. Last year with a 6 y/o and this year she is 7. I say the activity book is a must. She colors while I read the chapter. There are tons of suggestions in it for library books, crafts, games, even recipes. We use the questions and map work every time. I will be buying the next book in the series.
