What I like:- It is from the child's perspective and addresses some of the not-always happy or nervous feelings a child may have with the birth of a new sibling. The book sends the message that it's ok to feel confused or unsure, which I think is great. While I think it's important to focus on the excitement of a new baby, it is nice to address the confusion/frustration that can happen too.- The pictures are full of detail and fun to look at.- Mommy has a realistic large tummy after baby is born- The book talks about how mommy will have to go to the hospital and will be away to have the baby. It also shows the child going to visit mommy at the hospital- The story covers right before birth and after baby comes home. It points out that the baby will need to be fed/held and mommy may not be immediately available like she is now. I like that it talks about how the big brother's life may be a little different, but that he is always loved.- It encourages children to talk to their parents if they are having a hard time or feeling sad after baby comes home.What I'm not a fan of:- Multiple pages of the book (at least 5 maybe more) are dedicated to how long mommy will be gone and how sad that might be. I agree with the other reviewers that it is way too much. When I read this extensive part of the story, my almost three year old seems a little sad/down which is NOT what I want. I usually skip some pages or make up other words to talk about how she may miss mommy, but she'll have special alone time with Grammy and Grandpa.- There is little focus on how fun being a big brother/sister will be. As I said above, it focuses more on the possible negative emotions that may happen. I think it's important to make the child feel like it's ok to be having a tough time, but it would be great if there was more of a positive take on the transition and how fun it is to be a big kid.- There is only one version: A boy who's welcoming a little sister. I have a girl and am having a little boy. It would be nice to have an option of brother/sister book- or at the very least have the baby be gender neutral. This isn't very important but my daughter is quite young and the more she can relate to the characters, the better she understands.I think this book addresses many important aspects to having a new baby. It may be tough for very young children to grasp because the focus is on emotional changes. Overall it is helpful, but I prefer other books for my daughter
Great book! We read this over and over to my 2 year old preparing the arrival for her sister. We changed the character names to match our family. We even used the ideas the book gave. Talks about going to the hospital and who is going to take care of the little one and what is going to happen when mommy and daddy get home with the new baby.
Best book for older sibilings..especially an only child
This is an awesome book. We bought it for my 4t when we were about to have a sibling and it worked great. It has most of what the "big brother" should expect and it validates their feelings of sadness, need for patience, etc. It got him really excited about the hospital visit as well. Highly recommend it.
Not a bad book just not what i would have expected. Didnt give me a warm fuzzy feeling while reading it that i had hoped. It was a,gift to my grandson of 5 who has his 1st sibling on the way
Great prep for lil one. My son loves it and mimics our family making it even more relatable. Two year old son understands what's going on and is siked to be welcoming a baby brother. At least so far :-)
Our son is 3, we bought several of these books to prepare him and I would say this is the best one. Very comprehensive but with simple enough language and the right feel and tone.
My daughter really likes it but I cringe when she asks me to read it. Spends a lot of time talking about how mom will be gone for a long time.
