Extraordinary research into the history of Oz makes this tome a must-have on my shelf. The photos are a wonderful companion to the text. Well-written and structured prose. There were few surprises for me, although Bobby Koshay's duties in the making of the film were more extensive and more interesting than I had known previously. Also, a few myths were debunked, which is always welcome, and some of the insight into the effects were beautifully explained. A very worthy book and, to be frank, NECESSARY for any Ozmite.
I have all of the other fine Oz books by Scarfone and Stillman, so I knew that this would be a must-have. What surprised me was the amount of NEW material presented, and in such detail that I really felt like I was experiencing the story for the first time. I had never read so many bits of information gleaned from many contemporary sources (over 20 pages of Bibliography!) that really gives the flavor of the 1930s movie industry. The rare photos are also a treat. The story is still presented in a roughly chronological way, but the chapters focus on one subject, such as casting, script-writing, or the several directors who worked on the picture. I think the fact that this book is not authorized/licensed by Warner Bros (who owns the rights to the movie itself), gave the authors the freedom to present a history that includes some more negative things that happened, but that is balanced with a clear-eyed assessment of the Legacy of the movie in its nearly 80 years. Even if you have all the other "Making Of The Wizard of Oz" books that are out there, even the other ones by Scarfone and Stillman, you NEED to get this one too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Just when you think that there is no further information that could be shared about the evolution of this classic film, here it is! Scarfone and Stillman have created another great book devoted to OZ and the famous 1939 film. It is packed with tidbits of new information as well as debunking of old gossip and rumors! Worth reading a second time and then keeping for quick reference in the future, too! And packed with great photos (some very rare and never-before-seen!)
William Stillman and Jay Scarfone have already written wonderful coffee table books with tons of photos on the 1939 MGM film, but The Road to Oz is a fantastic addition to their corpus of works on Oz. The research is incredible and the two have come up with new facts and new anecdotes not to be found anywhere else. Numerous b&w never before seen photos from the authors' personal collections are also included. It's not a book to be rushed through and should be read carefully and sometimes reread. I guarantee that you will be hardput to put it down, but don't rush it. Savor it for all the wonderful bits and pieces. It will surely stand for years to come as the definitive history of this wonderful film. Oa fan.
I've read everything I could get my hands on about the making of THE WIZARD OF OZ. It's refreshing to actually read something new about a movie that's (almost) 80-years-old.
A nice trip down memory lane, these guys have dug up every thing associated with OZ. I’m a Garland fan and wished they focused more on the intense work/promotion demands of their star, but in the evolution of OZ I guess she is only a small part, but it helped lead to her downfall☹ï¸
