As someone who loves Knausgaard's "My Struggle" series (and anxiously awaits the last part, due in English this year??), I enjoyed this book. He and another author are simply exchanging letters, as they watch (from two different locales) the World Cup soccer matches. I don't even care for soccer as a sport but this book still captivates. Seeing the game thru THEIR eyes, gave me a better appreciation of it. But it was all the tangential issues they both wrote about, and in such a personal way as befits 'personal letters', that really are enriching. As with his other books, you just feel like your own life is richer for having been given such intimate glimpses into someone else's life, no matter how different those lives are. If you like Knausgaard, you'll enjoy this book.
Don't dismiss this book because it focuses on soccer. This is a gem! I am a Knausgaard fan, and while there is plenty of discussion about soccer (I'm not into soccer myself) it is the insights and the thoughts that are raised in this book about various aspects of life that are so compelling and thought provoking.
excellent book about the world cup and aspects european history
For fans of Karl Ove, and truly for fans of football, this is an amazing work. Readers not only get to know the authors through their stories and sporting theories, but also get to relive the most recent World Cup in Brazil in a very human way. Reading this account is akin to sitting in a pub and chatting about the beautiful game with fellow true football lovers.
A great read for anyone who followed the last World Cup in Brazil. Should also be of interest to all fans of soccer or Karl Ove Knusgaard.
An engrossing read through and through.
I wasn't sure I'd be all that interested in this book; I had thought it would be about football (soccer to Knausgaard and all Europeans). But as I began to read it I discovered that in the correspondence between these two close friends much more was discussed than the game. Conversations ranged from the topics of literature, philosophy, history, psychology, memoir-writing, and more, and all proved to be fascinating and quite well-written. A really good read.
As a correspondence these two men have made a safe space for themselves to ramble on about football. Sometimes that rambling is engaging like a good pub discussion but mostly it's banal & rather frequently unapologetically chauvinist & racist.Knausgaard is the Jonathan Franzen of Europe. His sexism is so casual. I suppose I shouldn't expect less from a writer whose success is predicated on mansplaining 'not all men' over 3600 pages. Ekelund balances this with a fervent distaste or fetishization of any race/religion outside his own. His is the sad bigotry of the Enlightenment white man.All of this made the tiny gems about football too few to warrant the effort. A profoundly disappointing book
