This is one of the best for crossword puzzle fans, as it allows you to complete puzzles by looking up winners of some specific sports events, films, etc all in one place. Annoyed because the down clue is an ancient god, and the across is a film role, there is hope in this dictionary. Foreign word definitions (Spanish, French, German) are decent and helpful. The version now shipping has about 1500 entries updated to 2016 at the end, after the XYZ section, which includes sports, movies, politicians (i.e. foreign leaders). Yes, one can use Google, but then consider how your questions to esoteric items will change how Google answers normal searches.A drawback is that the Latin words could use some expanding.
This gem is my second copy. In addition to word updates, it has an index along the side of the pages that is worth the price of admission all by itself. Before you give me any raspberries for using a dictionary to help with crosswords, I feel that foreign languages should be illegal for English crosswords. :) It's also nice not to have to toss a puzzle because you can't get the answer to a clue like "simultaneous advantage" (3 letters).
I got this as s gift for someone who loves crossword puzzles. Personally, I don't care for them. I usually get about 4 words in and then get frustrated. A week later, I saw the book and a crossword puzzle book lying on the table and thought, "how much can a dictionary help if you don't know the first few letters?"First of all, it's not really a dictionary. The words don't have definitions, just a list of related words sorted by length. It's closer to a thesaurus than a dictionary, except that it also has pop culture references, sports players, actors, slang words, and all sorts of phrases you might see in a crossword clue.Second of all, it helps a LOT. Sometimes you can look up the clues verbatim and see the answer listed. These ones feel kinda like cheating and aren't much fun. Most of the time, though, you have to be a little bit clever in what you look up. Sometimes you'll find the answer on the third word, sometimes on the tenth. Either way, the book gives you clues and ideas to bounce off of.Solving crossword puzzles without this book is like a trivia contest; you either know it or you don't. Solving them with the book is like a scavenger hunt; you'll keep hunting for clues until you figure it out.Bottom line: it's not for everyone. Diehard trivia fans will probably see this as a crutch and possibly enjoy crossword puzzles less while using it. For people like me, who weren't huge crossword fans to begin with, this book brings a very welcome change of pace.
Disappointed with the construction quality of the book. Comparing it to THE MILLION WORD etc., by Newman and Stark believe First Edition in white cover: This cover is a thin paper. Old edition had a harder paper cover and was laminated. WOULD HAVE PREFERRED PAYING A HIGHER PRICE FOR A BOOK OF THE SAME QUALITY, as it is obvious this product will be handled extensively. A page of the new book cannot compare to a page of the old book, TODAY after many years of wear. I have personally laminated the covers to give it some body and have added a jacket for the book, but as the pages are folded and bent as one works with the new edition it will not hold up. The life of this new product will be only a fraction of that of the older edition. Sorry to be writing a negative critique about what was a unique American product.
This book, The Million Word Crossword Dictionary (2nd Edition), was recommended by a friend. My husband and I do crosswords almost every day. Formerly, we had been using just a regular dictionary, and then of course, we didn't know what we were missing. So, upon recommendation, I purchased this book for Christmas. And what a revelation! This is the greatest crossword dictionary going! For us, it has everything we need and then some. Not just word definitions, but crossword information on countries, states, books, films - you name it and it's there.Another great feature is that information for a particular word or answer you are looking for is organized by the number of letters in the answer you are seeking. For instance, if you are looking for a 5-letter answer just look for the answer information after the number 5, which is in bold print and easy to spot.Another example is that when we were looking for the name of "Frasier"'s dog - the sitcom on past television, we looked up Frasier, the tv sitcom and there was a listing of all the information about the show - including their dog's name!We will never be without this Million Word Crossword Dictionary now or in the future. It is a pretty thick volume and the paper cover is pretty flimsy for a book this size. We put a library-type plastic film covering put over the front, binding and back cover (all one piece) and it is now sturdier. I hope,in future editions, the cover will be sturdier. But regarding the information contained in this dictionary, you won't be disappointed. It's great! In fact, every time we find a unique answer, I find myself saying "This book is absolutely amazing"!
