Review

“Entertaining…both Adam Smith and Horatio Alger would find something to like in the rise of T. Boone Pickens.”—Wall Street Journal “The latest memoir from the Texas oilman…Pickens’ sauciness does entertain.”—Time magazine“Sassy…breezes along…salted with earthy aphorisms.”—Bloomberg.com“Self-deprecating and audacious…overall, it’s decidedly informative about the machinations of business.”—Dallas Morning News“A fascinating, eye-opening book by one of America's greatest iconoclasts and entrepreneurs. Boone Pickens’ sense of daring and innovation has never been sharper. Readers will quickly realize that this billionaire's extraordinary achievements are but a warm-up for what he is about to do now.”—Steve Forbes, President and CEO, Forbes Inc., and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine“Boone’s analysis of America’s energy situation is 100% on the money.  In easy and colorful language he tells us where we are going wrong and what we must do about it.  The country should listen to him — now!”—Warren Buffett, Chairman and CEO, Berkshire Hathaway“It is inspiring to see Boone Pickens tackling the big issues, daring himself to think bigger, putting forward wind, water and energy ideas that are nothing less than paradigm busters. This absorbing and illuminating book shows why Boone has been more successful than just about all his competitors, and, more crucially, why the problem of resource scarcity may not be as insoluble as some think.”—Jeffrey Immelt, CEO, General Electric“Boone Pickens was among the first to grasp that corporations can be marvelous catalysts for progress if individual investors are given a say in what their priorities should be.  Today, as humanity faces resource scarcity and dwindling supplies of cheap energy, the responsibility that has devolved to entrepreneurs, and the investors who back them, has never been more immense.  Yet, in recounting his own story of comeback after comeback and tackling some of history's biggest oil, wind and water projects, Boone shows that sometimes all it takes is rejecting the ‘usual’ and striking out across virgin territory.  In that sense, Boone is a pioneer, and this is a pioneer’s story.  Even now, the man they call the Oracle of Oil is blazing new paths that may, indeed, lead us out of the predicament we find ourselves in.”—Carl Icahn, Chairman, Icahn & Co., Inc.From the Hardcover edition.

You should read this book. Wisdom and wit galore."Most people, both in business and in life, surrender. As a result, they fall short of their dreams, opportunities, and potential. I learned that if you never give up, if you push through the resistance and keep driving for what you want, you will ultimately achieve rewards beyond any you had hoped for. Because down deep, just beyond the hard, tough spot we all have found ourselves in, there awaits the opportunity to become stronger, more successful, and more fulfilled than you have ever imagined. Never, never, never give up." - T. Boone Pickens

This is a colorful and engaging autobiography. Pickens shares insights into his personal and business successes, setbacks, and comebacks; his sundry business undertakings (oil, natural gas, natural gas filling stations, wind, water, hedge fund management); his vision for America's energy future; his leadership philosophy; his competitiveness; lessons learned; and his philanthropic activities. The book is fascinating, thought-provoking, and inspirational. I've listened to the audio version four or five times already. It's that good.

Very quick, but enjoyable read. I really like the self deprecating nature of T. Boone and you will come to appreciate his humor and like the man as he depicts the highlight moments of his career. I gave this 4 stars only because this is billed by many as one of the best books about business out there--that I do not agree. It may have been a problem of expectations but I would not put this book in the category of one of the best, but an extremely easy read that I think anyone would enjoy.

As someone who generally follows the motto, "the government that governs best, governs least"...I recant! Boone Pickens describes in this book why it is critical for the government to help establish new energy transmission corridors in the US to allow new wind and solar energy generating sources to flourish. We also need to convert our engines to burn natural gas--a domestic resource we can use to help replace our need for crude oil. I agree with him!The chief lesson here is that the world of cheap oil is over. Don't believe Pickens? Then read Matthew Simmons book "Twighlight in the Desert" about the maturing Saudi Oil fields. Forget the recent drop in oil prices...high oil is here to stay over the long term...and as the Chinese and Indian economies flourish in the next decade or so, look out!!!The US must prepare now to get off its addiction to oil, and Picken's got a great plan. No doubt, he stands to make a lot of money if his plan is enacted, but no doubt, I'd rather the money go to him than to a lot of the folks currently making money off my gas guzzling Camry. Join the "Picken's Plan"--see his web site--this is a true once in a lifetime grass roots movement that may make a big difference to the future of the US. Go Pickens!

Really enjoyed this book. I am in the oil and gas industry so I enjoyed seeing the different aspects of it from his perspective. He was wrong in saying that new technology will not enable us to discover more oil. Book was published in 2008 and shortly after that the shale boom came along thanks to, "New Technology". Did not make me look at this book any different because no one really saw the shale boom coming. Now the U.S. is set to be the top oil producer by 2015. Enough with the facts, give it a read you will enjoy it. I hope his plan for natural gas takes off, from what I can see it is catching hold. Have seen more fleets in the news lately going with nat gas thanks to his company Clean Energy Fuels installing the infrastructure for them to do so.

I found this book tedious and irritating, the only reason I finished it is because Verne Harnish recommended it in one of his seminars. The purpose of the book is for Pickens to tell us about his success. There is little else to it. Some might find his billion dollar story taking high risk bets on energy commodities inspirational. I didn't. The first time he got it wrong and he lost his company. The second time the Iraq war came along and his bet paid off.The only useful information I got out of this book that I might use for myself is1. Pickens worked hard, getting up very early every morning2. He met with his top team very early in the morning, before his workout, and again at the end of the day - every day.On a chapter on philanthropy he paints himself as one of the greats - donating over $400M. We discover later in the chapter that this money went to his college athletic department, to drag his football team out of the cellar. Move over Bill Gates.A lightweight affair oozing Pickens' ego from every page.Verne put me on to another title that is possibly the best book on business I have read - The Ultimate Question 2.0. (Topic - Customer focus driving strategy and operations) Brilliant! The Ultimate Question 2.0 (Revised and Expanded Edition): How Net Promoter Companies Thrive in a Customer-Driven World

Certainly Pickens is a well accomplished man, but I found the book to lack a clear style or purpose. It included some entertaining stories but nothing very deep about business management. Boone seems to want the government to both, prop up his industries but to also have very little oversight over them. I thought his philosophies contradicted themselves frequently.

In this book, Pickens proves inspiring and motivational. The early part of the book is focused on his developmental period of post-grad life and early business exploration. The later half combined his capitalistic approaches with his passion for alternative energy. T. Boone is an incredibly smart man, role model, and knowledgable advocate for reversing America's dependency on foreign oil. Great read!
