After using RoboHelp HTML for over 10 years, my employer decided to switch to MadCap Flare because I recommended this software. Well, then my boss said I'd have to get up to speed using it on my own. Yikes! I had to find good instructions to quickly get up to speed. And this book was immediately selected to help me learn how to use Flare. But what I really liked was the way Scott's book relayed his instructions while comparing Flare to RoboHelp. I've been using Flare for about two years now, but I keep Scott's book right at my side and refer to it often. Even though Scott's book is written for version 4 and MadCap Flare is up to version 5, the basic features and comparisons of Flare to RoboHelp will apply. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn about MadCap Flare and how it compares to RoboHelp.
Clearly written, concise and to-the-point: a superb introduction Flare both conceptually (how it differs from RoboHelp) and tactically (how to use its features if you're used to RoboHelp). It exemplifies well written, no nonsense technical writing. One of the best aspects of this book is that it honestly compares the two help authoring systems and helps you weigh using one over the other. Excellent shortcut lists, a handy task index (and nice task orientation for the whole book), and a lovely, usable index. A must-have for any user considering Flare.
Book is out of date as both products are about 10years old now
I recently switched from RoboHelp to MadCap Flare. The paper documentation that came with the program was not very detailed. I purchased this book in the hopes that it would help me transition. Most of what was in the book I had already figured out myself using Flare's help system. I was expecting something with much more detail and more examples. While mechanically it is accurate, it left much to be desired especially at $45.00.I would recommend buying a book on Cascading Style Sheets (the area where I had the most trouble) instead of this book.I am anxiously awaiting a book in the vein of "Teach Yourself Flare in 24 hrs".
